Today I saw a beautiful little blond girl being proudly held by her gorgeous mama. They had huge happy smiles on their faces. Smiles that depicted some of the happiest times in life. Times where the whole world seems to be going right…
…but then I read the text below the photo.
“I just wanted to let everyone know that we are stopping treatment. The cancer is not responding to any treatment & our baby girl is tired.”
That phrase takes me right back to 2020. It has dread in my heart and a pit in the depth of my stomach. Another family knows the fear of what is to come, the sorrow of what they can only imagine right now. Soon another family will watch their little girl close her eyes to their faces as she opens them to the face of Jesus. My heart breaks.
No, I do not know this family. We have never met and probably won’t cross paths this side of heaven but it doesn’t matter. I have stood where they are standing. My heart has broken just as their hearts are breaking. I get it…
Sadly, since Millie was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2019, I have watched child after child fight. I have seen parent after parent bury their baby. Over and over my heart has broken for these families and I wanted to do something to help, yet I often feel helpless. When I wrote “Millie Finds Her Miracle”, I did it with the hope of putting a book in each of these parent’s hands. I wanted the book to arrive as the child went into hospice so the parents could comfort them about what was to come. I have since learned that people are also reading it to their surviving children to help them understand where their sibling went.
As I work toward getting these books into the right hands, I am also reminded that I cannot do it alone. This is where YOU come in.
