Of Stones and Stories

"Are you getting better?"

Maybe…what does better look like?

"Are you putting it behind you?"

I’m not sure that is possible.

Love, life, loss, and grief are funny creatures. They hold you hostage, keeping their place, allowing you to sometimes to feel one way but just as quickly to drag you back under their control.

I am getting better—which simply means I carry this grief softer. It’s not gone, but the pain doesn’t take me to the floor (as often) anymore.

Does putting it behind you mean forgetting? If so, then no, never will I put it behind me. Love and life have a way of overshadowing the loss and grief. We talk about Millie without tears because we talk of her life. We share her life story. We sing her life song! She lived so much life in 3 years. She touched so many not because she died, but because she LIVED!

Interestingly enough the Bible tells us to remember, not to forget.

In the Old Testament section God commanded the Hebrews to place stones of remembrance in special places. Why rocks? So that as the children said “Mom why is that rock piled up there?” and then the parents could use that to say, “God commanded us to remember and tell our children of his goodness”.

So, I pile my stones up. Stones that tell Millie’s story, hoping that her story is pointing to His Story and of the goodness of God.

One of those stones is this blog. Another stone is the book "Millie Finds Her Miracle". Yet another stone is publicly sharing her life story face to face with others. When someone asks me what these stones represent, I can point them to Jesus.

Do you have stones in your life?

Maybe a special item that sits on your mantle? Is it a medal, a cherished hand-me-down, a family story that gets shared? Do your stones point to your life or ultimately to the one who gives you strength during the hard places in your life?

I would love to hear about your stones and the stories they tell…

The stone on Millie's pillow is a special stone from a friend named David. He sent this unique stone to her in the hospital shortly after she was diagnosed. We keep this stone as a rememberance.
