Often God will place others in your path for a short time. It might be a moment, a day, a weekend, or even a year. Some become precious friends in daily practice, others only social media friends. Many you have things in common with which is the very thing that draws you together in the first place.
Grieving parents often fall in this category for me. I may meet them on the internet, at a retreat, or even just in my daily life. We instantly connect because we both understand to a degree the struggle the other is going through. We may never see each other earthside again yet our hearts are bonded together from now on.
One sweet friend like that, is a precious lady I met named Tammy. We spent the day together at a Ladies retreat that focused on sharing our stories about our children we have lost. I met Tammy a few short months after Millie headed to heaven. My emotions were so raw then. Most things brought tears, both the sharing of our grief but also the hearing of her story. They were different, her sorrow is losing an adult son, mine is a little girl. Yet so alike-- we are two moms who miss our babies dearly! There is no difference there.
That first Christmas Tammy remembered me when she shared something a local (to her) town was doing to honor those gone ahead. They made Christmas ornaments and hung it on the town tree. Tammy went to see her son’s ornament and while she was there she found Millie’s ornament and snapped a picture to send to me. I was so blessed that someone remembered our daughter and knew how important it was to show it.
Recently, I got a request from Tammy for our address. As I opened a rather large envelope, I realized Tammy had saved Millie’s ornament for me. I can only assume that when she went to collect her son’s, she collected our ornament too. I didn’t know about collecting them and honestly assumed they were just paper hung up with their name. I never dreamed that the organizers made large, plexiglass ornaments with each person’s name. It was instant joy to open that love gift and add it to Millie’s collection.
What a treasure from my long-distance friend… Thank you Tammy!
